THE PURPOSE OF THE HOTLINE

The DEA-SCU Crime & Corruption Reporting Hotline was established on 2026/07/13 and on 2026/08/13 launched.

The Drug Enforcement Agency Street Crimes Unit is the first crime-fighting organization that ever existed legally in South Africa to combat crime alongside the Law Enforcement Authorities, and they go the extra mile to make a difference in the communities by launching this Crime & Corruption Reporting Hotline.

The purpose of the DEA-SCU Crime & Corruption Reporting Hotline is to provide members of the public with an independent channel through which information concerning suspected criminal activity, corruption, fraud and other serious misconduct may be submitted.

The hotline supports responsible information gathering, community safety, crime prevention and the lawful referral of information to competent authorities.

It is not an SAPS emergency line, police station, government hotline or substitute for an official criminal complaint.

The hotline may receive information concerning suspected:

• Drug-related criminal activity
• Corruption
• Fraud
• Human trafficking
• Robbery and theft
• Vehicle hijacking
• Extortion
• Illegal firearms
• Criminal syndicates
• Other suspected offences or serious threats to community safety

Deliberately false or malicious allegations may have legal consequences.

  • Who is the DEA STREET CRIMES UNIT?
They are an independent nonprofit crime prevention and investigations organization.
DEA-SCU is an independent nonprofit organization committed to crime prevention, community safety, investigative support, public awareness, and the lawful reporting of suspected criminal activity.
The organization works independently while cooperating, where appropriate and lawful, with SAPS and other competent law-enforcement authorities.
  • Is the Drug Enforcement Agency Street Crimes Unit an organ of the government in South Africa?
The Drug Enforcement Agency Street Crimes Unit is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization.
It is not a division, branch, or component of the South African Police Service, DPCI/Hawks, a municipal police service, or any other organ of state.
  • Does the Drug Enforcement Agency Street Crimes Unit have arresting powers?
 YES & NO, but only under section 42 of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977 can a lawful arrest be exercised.

Drug Enforcement Agency Street Crimes Unit does not claim general police powers or statutory law-enforcement powers.

Its activities are limited to those permitted by applicable South African law.
The organization may cooperate with, provide information to, or support competent law-enforcement authorities where lawful and appropriate.
